Overview
Route Idiot is a variant of the Windows Store app Track of the Day , a very powerful tool for professional research and route planning. Some users found the functionality of Track of the Day too extensive and overwhelmed, prompting calls for an idiot-proof version of Track of the Day . This is also the reason for the name of this highly simplified version of Track of the Day .
One app, two versions
During the development of Route Idiot, everything in Track of the Day that wasn’t absolutely necessary for simple route planning was removed. This created a kind of light version of Track of the Day . For this reason, the executable files of both apps have the same name. If you open the Windows Task Manager, you might find a process called TrackOfTheDay.exe .
Typical error situations
Position sharing in Windows
You can share your current location in the Windows security settings. This allows Route Idiot to query the operating system for your current location. If your computer doesn’t have a GPS module installed, Windows attempts to determine your current location using the internet connection. This can result in significant deviations. Often, the location of the nearest known internet node is displayed, which may be several kilometers away. If Windows location sharing doesn’t provide a reasonable location, you can also specify your current location manually in the application settings.
Right-clicking on the map also gives you the option to set your current location. This home location is useful for functions like „Route here . „
Windows Firewall
Route Idiot relies heavily on services provided by Microsoft, Google, Here, GraphHopper, openAI, DeepL, OSM, and other providers. These services provide maps, route calculations, elevation data, and much more. For Route Idiot to function correctly, this app may need to be enabled in the Windows Firewall . Please note that the executable process may be named RouteIdiot or TrackOfTheDay .
Controlled folder access
With Windows 11, Microsoft introduced Controlled Folder Access . This can be enabled or disabled in the security settings. When this feature is enabled, only authorized apps can store their data in the Documents folder within the Windows user profile. To ensure that Route Idiot can build the complete folder structure upon initial startup, you should temporarily disable Controlled Folder Access and re-enable it after the first successful startup. Afterward, an exception must be created for the folder C:\Users\UserName\Dokuments\ROUTE IDIOT . This folder may have a different name on German Windows installations.
Register Pro license
With a Pro license from the web shop at www.Trackof-the-day.com , you can upgrade Route Idiot to the full range of functions. Each license must be registered once in the TD Cloud . Up to ten parallel installations are possible on private computers. If Route Idiot was installed on another private computer, select the „Restore License“ function there . The same applies if a computer needs to be completely reinstalled. To ensure the restoration works, it is essential to save your login information on a USB stick or other storage device after registration.
License has expired
Neither Track of the Day nor Route Idiot offer any unwanted subscriptions. Everything is fair and transparent. Once a Pro license expires, you automatically receive a Free Edition . You can upgrade to a Pro Edition at any time if needed . All licenses can be found in the Track of the Day web shop.
